Carrick's first Man Utd signing revealed as Tonali announcement made
Manchester United are set to seal their first signing in the Michael Carrick era after closing in on a deal for one of their biggest priorities this summer.
United are looking to make significant moves after qualifying for next season’s Champions League and appointing Carrick as their permanent manager earlier this month.
The club have made no secret of their desire to sign at least two midfielders this summer, with Elliot Anderson top of United’s shortlist following an impressive season for Nottingham Forest.
However, recent reports have suggested that Anderson is close to joining rivals Manchester City and United have instead looked to accelerate a move for Atalanta star Ederson.
United have held a long-standing interest in Ederson, with the Brazilian’s contract set to expire next summer, and Sky Sports have confirmed that talks over a deal are now in their ‘final stages’.
The fee is expected to be an initial amount of €40.5 million guaranteed plus €3.5m in add-ons, with a full agreement thought to be likely by the end of the week.
Ederson deal close with ‘decisive assault’ planned on Tonali
The deal could soon be followed up with a move for Sandro Tonali after Calciomercato suggested that the Newcastle star is the ‘first name’ in United’s plans after Ederson.
Tonali is expected to leave Newcastle after the Magpies missed out on European football for next season, with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City also admiring the 26-year-old.
Newcastle would demand a fee close to €100m for Tonali but those demands ‘don’t scare United at all’ and a ‘decisive assault’ is set to be launched on the Italian.
Personal terms are said to have already been agreed with Tonali, with Newcastle already thought to have already started looking for a replacement such as Inter’s Aleksandar Stankovic.
Sources are described as ‘convinced’ that Tonali will ultimately sign for United and join Ederson as part of a new-look midfield under Carrick, with the focus then likely to move towards a forward as well as a left-sided defender.
