Man Utd Transfer News Today: Red Devils 'put off' Palmer signing with Rogers emerging as target
All the latest transfer news, rumours and gossip from Manchester United including updates on Castello Lukeba, Casemiro and Cole Palmer.
Exclusive: Man Utd lead race to sign RB Leipzig's Castello Lukeba
The Red Devils are expected to be fairly active in the market this summer and we understand that Lukeba has been earmarked as the club’s primary defensive target as they look to bolster the first-team squad at Old Trafford.
Sources have informed us that Man Utd have already initiated talks with Lukeba’s representatives and they are eager to beat a number of other top clubs to his signature amid historical interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester City.
Lukeba’s current contract at Leipzig, which runs until 2029, is believed to include an €80 million release clause, but there is an expectation that he will be allowed to depart the Bundesliga outfit for a slightly lower fee this summer.
United prefer Palmer to Rogers
Mason Mount’s future at Manchester United could become uncertain if the club make a move for Cole Palmer in the future, although Morgan Rogers is believed to be a greater priority than the Chelsea star.
FootballTransfers was told earlier in the season that Aston Villa star Rogers could emerge as a target for United this summer, while the Red Devils have always held an interest in Palmer.
But Jacobs told The United Stand: “If Cole Palmer were to join Manchester United, it would put a question mark over Mason Mount.
“Two things put United off Palmer: the first is that he is a ten. He doesn’t float wide or doesn’t relish going to the right or the left. He’s not your out-and-out winger.
“With Cunha and Mbeumo both signed as tens, to go again with a massive fee on effectively another player who wants to go ten or second striker and have all the freedom in the centre of the park is just not the priority.
“Rogers is different to Palmer because, although he can play in that position, he’s just as comfortable as a left winger and then when Bruno Fernandes eventually leaves, you could then move him centrally and interchange him with Cunha, who can also play on the left, so it’s a stylistic difference.”
Casemiro responds to contract speculation
The Brazilian is set to leave United this summer upon the expiry of his contract and, when asked directly about staying another year, he told ESPN: “I don't think there's a chance, there's no chance.
“Mostly because of what I said, you know? Go out the big door, I think it was four beautiful, wonderful years and I am eternally grateful not only to the club, but to the fans.
“But I think I have to leave in good terms, I have to go out on top. I will be an eternal United fan here in England and I just have to thank all the love from the fans.”
Man Utd eye Lyon winger
The 21-year-old has been a revelation in Ligue 1 this season. Last summer, Moreira joined Lyon for a measly €2 million, which was a deal that caused astonishment among Sporting CP supporters.
According to A Bola, Man Utd are among the clubs interested in Moreira ahead of a summer in which they are expected to dip into the market for a left winger. Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford are set to leave Old Trafford.
For now, Man Utd's interest appears to be just that. He is on the club's radar, but there are no suggestions that they are already thinking about placing a bid for the Portuguese youngster. In addition to the Red Devils, Moreira is also fielding interest from Serie A and the Bundesliga.
