Barcelona are on the verge of successfully carrying out their "lightning" signing of Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon.

Overnight, reports emerged that the Blaugrana had taken a liking to the England star, with club director Deco having travelled to London once again. It was initially thought that he was set for fresh talks with Chelsea over Joao Pedro, but the Portuguese had already moved on to a different target.

Spanish media spoke of a potential "lightning" deal for Gordon, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that a meeting between Deco and the player's entourage had taken place. The Magpies star didn't need much convincing when presented with the prospect of joining the LaLiga champions.

This afternoon, Romano announced that Barcelona had already reached a "total agreement" with the 25-year-old on personal terms and that Gordon was fully prioritising the Catalans over his other suitors.

The likes of Arsenal and, in particular, Bayern Munich have been strongly linked with Gordon. The winger already had an agreement with the Bundesliga champions on terms, but the Bavarians baulked at Newcastle's asking price.

Barcelona agree Gordon deal

Barcelona have no such concerns. David Ornstein reports that the Catalans have agreed a deal with Newcastle after making a whopping €80m bid.

The Magpies have accepted the offer - and they will retain a sell-on clause - despite the bid being lower than their reported asking price of over €90m. Nevertheless, it is a frankly remarkable proposal.

While it is expected that the Camp Nou side will be able - for the first time in a long time - to sign players without limitations this summer, an €80m fee is staggering when one considers that they had been haggling with Man Utd over a €30m figure for Marcus Rashford.

This Gordon deal likely means that a permanent signing of Rashford is now off the table, despite the Englishman's willingness to make major financial concessions in order to force through a deal.

Gordon is a direct replacement for Rashford, whose €30m purchase option expires on 15 June. Despite the significantly higher transfer outlay on the 25-year-old, Barcelona believe that the financial package would be similar to signing Rashford.

They are willing to offer Gordon a lengthier contract than his 28-year-old compatriot, giving them the ability to amortise their spending over a longer period of time. The Newcastle star's salary demands are also believed to be lower than Rashford's.

Gordon will sign a five-year deal and is expected to have his medical before the end of the week.
