Fabrizio Romano has delivered an extensive update on the latest from the transfer market, including Manchester United’s hopes of landing Luis Enrique, Real Madrid’s manager hunt and the truth behind Enzo Fernandez at Chelsea.

Man Utd ‘dreaming’ of Luis Enrique

Manchester United are still on the hunt for a permanent manager, and Romano has revealed that Luis Enrique has one ‘huge fan’ behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

“The reality on Luis Enrique and Manchester United is that there is someone internally at United who is a huge fan and dreams of Luis Enrique becoming United manager one day. So there is some truth in those reports from the last two or three months, in the sense that some people at United like the idea of Luis Enrique one day managing the club,” Romano told his YouTube channel.

“But that is all for now, because at the moment Luis Enrique is fully focused on PSG and on negotiating this new contract. And on top of that, Manchester United are very happy with the work done by Michael Carrick so far. They are not doubting him.

“United are going through their internal process to decide the best possible solution for the managerial situation, because they know they need to choose their permanent manager for the 2026-27 season and beyond. So that remains the plan. Internally, they are talking about it, but for now there is full confidence in Carrick.”

Luis Enrique close to new PSG deal

Romano has confirmed that Luis Enrique head coach is close to agreeing an extension to his deal at PSG.

“He is one of the best managers in the world, if not the best, and he is doing an incredible job at Paris Saint-Germain. Together with Luis Campos, who signed the players, and president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, they have built something fantastic at PSG. Luis Enrique remains a crucial part of that project,” Romano added.

“Today there were reports again from France, from RMC Sport, about Luis Enrique signing a new contract at Paris Saint-Germain. What I can say is that PSG remain absolutely optimistic. Nothing has been signed yet, but the club remains very confident, as they always have been.

“I have already told you that the conversation is ongoing over a new contract, with an improved salary and with control of the project together with Luis Campos and Al-Khelaifi. The talks are very positive, and PSG want to get it done before the end of the season. So the conversation is advancing very well. We still need the final green light, but that is the situation.”

Didier Deschamps to Real Madrid?

Real Madrid are another club with one eye on the managerial market, and shock reports on Friday suggested they could appoint France boss Didier Deschamps following the World Cup. Romano says there are no talks as yet.

“As always, with maximum respect to the sources reporting this, I can tell you that from Real Madrid, the message is clear: they have made no contact, and there are no direct talks with any manager,” Romano said.

“The club’s full focus is on the present with Álvaro Arbeloa. The next couple of weeks are going to be crucial because there is the Champions League clash against Bayern and also La Liga. So there are still many things to clarify in terms of the future.

“We know how important results are at a club like Real Madrid, and that is even more true there. But at the moment, no contact has been made with any manager.

“As for Didier Deschamps, he is expected to leave the French national team after the World Cup. Zinedine Zidane is expected to become the new manager of France if nothing strange happens, because nothing is officially signed yet, but there is a verbal pact in place with the French Federation. So that remains the plan.

“That could also be an interesting opportunity in the future market for managers, but right now nothing is advanced with any club. Real Madrid still have the chance to continue with Arbeloa or choose a different solution for the coming years.”

Enzo Fernandez’s Chelsea tension continues

Although Enzo Fernandez’s agent claims there is ‘peace’ at Chelsea over the Argentina midfielder’s status, Romano has confirmed that there are still issues to resolve.

“Enzo is out for Chelsea right now, but he will be back next week. Today, Liam Rosenior said that they still have points to clarify with Enzo Fernandez. He apologised to the squad, to the manager, and to the club, so everything has been clarified regarding that interview,” Romano said.

“But the contract situation remains important. Chelsea and Enzo are still in contact and they still need to clarify the future because, as I have always told you, they have been negotiating a new contract for some time. There is no agreement on the numbers yet, and that is why there have been moments of tension between Chelsea and Enzo’s camp.

“So if they do not agree on a new deal from now until the end of the season, then we will have to see what happens in the summer. But the key point remains the same: Enzo’s present will continue next week when he returns to the squad, and the future is still open.”

Schlotterbeck signs Dortmund deal

Dortmund centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck was a player who several clubs were studying with an eye on signing as a free agent, but the Germany international has committed his future to Dortmund.

“Despite interest from several clubs, including Real Madrid and English clubs, Schlotterbeck has chosen to stay and trust the Dortmund project,” Romano said.

“I can also confirm the Kicker report that there will be a release clause in the deal, around 60 million euros. So yes, the contract includes an exit route for the future.

“This new deal is also a sign of respect for Borussia Dortmund, because Schlotterbeck did not want to leave on a free. He wants to stay committed to the club, but at the same time he is not closing the door to a move to another top club in the future. That is why the clause is included.

“So an important story, and Schlotterbeck has now put pen to paper on a new contract until 2031.”
