Schmeichel has been a mainstay in goal for Celtic since the beginning of the 2024/25 season, playing 88 times for the club, but the Denmark international could be forced to hang up his boots.

The 39-year-old has revealed that “everything’s kind of gone” in his shoulder, with the shot-stopper describing the problem as being like an outfielder suffering an ACL injury and tearing their Achilles at the same time.

Schmeichel announces massive injury blow

Speaking to CBS Sport, Schmeichel revealed: “I was at a specialist yesterday. Basically, I'm going to need two surgeries now to fix my shoulder, which is a bit of a body blow. It's basically torn the bicep, torn the rotator cuff, dislocated the shoulder, torn the labrum, everything's kind of gone.

“To maybe put it into terms that you can understand, it is like an outfielder doing their ACL and their Achilles at the same time. So, yeah, it's looking like 10 to 12 months of rehab. So, yeah, it's been a strange few days.”

Schmeichel admitted that it’s a blow that could end his career.

He added: “You don't really know how to react to this because, you know, I could have potentially played my last ever football game and I've been a footballer since the day I was born. And that kind of thought is, it's devastating. It's very, very hard to wrap my head around at the moment.”

Schmeichel up for the fight

A Premier League champion with Leicester, Schmeichel is not giving up for the moment.

“I'm going to give it absolutely everything I can to see if I can get back,” the goalkeeper said.

“It would be probably one of the greatest feats of my career if I could ever get back from an injury like this. Yeah, I'm going to fight, I'm going to try everything, I'm going to do everything I can, do the rehab, but right now, surgery next Friday, and that's going to be the first surgery, and then the big one will be whenever the surgeons say.”

Schmeichel is only under contract with Celtic until the end of the season and following this blow is highly unlikely to be retained.

The Hoops, meanwhile, are set to back 24-year-old Viljami Sinisalo as their first choice in goal until the end of the season.
