Why €60m Premier League left-wing option is not the right deal for Arsenal
Arsenal are considering a bid for Brentford attacker Kevin Schade, but will face a battle against other Premier League clubs, according to CaughtOffside.
The Gunners’ current left-wing options, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, have combined for six Premier League goals, with Trossard having scored five of those.
Across all competitions, Martinelli has 11 goals — including six in eight Champions League matches — while Trossard has seven.
Arsenal have struggled against low blocks this season, which has seen some of their star players’ goalscoring totals fall below standards.
That includes Bukayo Saka, who currently has six league goals in 27 matches. His rate of 0.27 goals per 90 minutes this season is his lowest since scoring 0.18 goals per 90 in 2020/21, when he was 20 years old.
Schade, with seven Premier League goals, could be an option, with a €60 million fee mentioned in the report. Tottenham, Aston Villa, and Newcastle are also reported to be interested in the player.
Can Schade fix Arsenal’s open play issues?
While Arsenal appear to struggle in open play, the Gunners still have more open play goals (35) in the league than every club except Manchester City (47).
Martinelli’s goal totals in the league and on the continent reflect the difference in approach between the two competitions.
His pace makes him much more of a danger man in the Champions League, as teams are less content to sit back and play for a draw than they are in the Premier League.
Trossard, meanwhile, has not scored in the league since the end of December, a streak that encompasses 11 matches.
Schade scored 11 league goals last season, but playing for Brentford — and facing opponents who are much more willing to attack — is a far different proposition from facing the low blocks that Arsenal often see.
Plus, his 9.64 Expected Goals are noticeably higher than his tally of seven goals scored, and he has only taken one shot from outside the box.
With a €60 million price tag recorded, Schade to Arsenal might not be the right move for the Premier League leaders.
