Nottingham Forest are in talks to appoint their fourth permanent manager of the season in a move that would break a Premier League record after the sacking of Sean Dyche.

Forest became the fifth club in Premier League history to have sacked three managers in one season when they dismissed Dyche on Wednesday night following a goalless draw against Wolves.

The result left Forest just three points above the drop zone after just two wins in their previous ten league matches, although they had only lost one of their last six games.

Forest are set to quickly name Dyche’s replacement after holding talks with Vitor Pereira, with the Portuguese coach having been sacked by Wolves in November.

Pereira has reportedly agreed to become Forest’s fourth appointment of the season and the 57-year-old is likely to be named as a permanent boss rather than an interim, which would mark a new record for the number of managers in a season for a single Premier League club.

FootballTransfers takes a look at the Premier League teams who have sacked three managers in a single campaign.

Nottingham Forest: 2025/26

Forest started the season with Nuno Espirito Santo at the helm after the Portuguese coach led the club to an impressive seventh place finish last season to see them qualify for Europe for the first time in 30 years.

However, Nuno’s relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis broke down over the summer and he was sacked in September just three games into the new season, with former Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou replacing him almost instantly.

But Postecoglou’s appointment proved to be disastrous and the Australian was sacked after just 39 days – the shortest stint of any permanent Premier League manager – having failed to win any of his eight matches in charge and losing six.

Dyche replaced Postecoglou and briefly helped Forest to a revival with a run of four victories in six matches, however he could only muster up two more wins in his final ten games, ultimately leading to his sacking.

Watford: 2019/20

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Watford are the only other team to have outright sacked three managers in one season, with Italian owner Gino Pozzo known for his short fuse for head coaches.

Watford began the 2019/20 season with Javi Gracia in charge but he was sacked after three losses in the club’s first four games, with Quique Sanchez Flores replacing him.

But Flores lasted less than two months in his second stint in charge, having only won one of his matches and he was sacked, with Nigel Pearson being appointed as a replacement.

With the infamous ‘covid season’ going on until late July, Pearson was sacked with two games remaining despite taking Watford from seven points adrift at the bottom to three points above the relegation zone upon his departure.

Hayden Mullins became Watford’s interim for the final two matches after their third sacking of the season but he lost both his games in charge to see the Hornets relegated.

Other mentions

Many other clubs such as Chelsea (2022/23), Newcastle (2008/09) and Leeds (2022/23) have had four coaches in charge in one campaign or changed manager at least three times but they either did not sack all their bosses or some were only on an interim basis.

They include Aston Villa (2015/16), Portsmouth (2008/09), Swansea City (2016/17) and West Brom (2017/18).
