Manchester United could be left with a costly problem on their hands this summer after a dramatic turn of events surrounding the future of an unwanted star.

United have been enjoying a rare period of positivity after winning four of their last five matches under Michael Carrick, with the club on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

However, while United were hoping for a fresh start after the Ruben Amorim era, one of their biggest problems has taken centre stage again, with Andre Onana having a disaster performance on loan at Trabzonspor.

The 29-year-old made a number of errors to concede three goals from all three shots on target he faced against Fenerbahce, leading Trabzonspor to lose 3-2 on Saturday against their rivals.

The situation led to huge criticism towards Onana from critics and fans and cast doubt on the prospect of him permanently joining Trabzonspor permanently this summer.

Onana could now return to Old Trafford at the end of the season and give the club a headache in trying to get his wages off the books, particularly with a clause that could see him gain a substantial boost to his salary if United qualify for the Champions League.

Onana facing uncertain future as mistakes prove costly for United once again

Onana joined United in 2023 for €50 million but the Cameroonian struggled during his two campaigns as the team’s number one, making a string of high-profile mistakes which ultimately led to him being replaced by Senne Lammens this season.

United’s fortunes have greatly improved under Lammens and the club are prepared to move forward with the 23-year-old as their long-term goalkeeper, however Onana still has two years remaining on his contract.

Crucially, Onana’s wages are due to rise from a reported €150,000-per-week to around €200,000 if United qualify for next season’s Champions League as part of his incentive-based contract, which could make getting rid of the keeper an even more difficult task.

Onana has endured a mixed time in Turkey so far and Trabzonspor are paying all his wages, although they appear unlikely to be able to afford a permanent move, if they choose to do so at all.

Inter have also been linked with a sensational move for Onana to bring their former goalkeeper back to the club but United would likely have to take a substantial loss to ensure they get rid of his wages once and for all this summer.
