Arsenal in fresh Ousmane Dembele boost after clear 'WORTHLESS' message
Ousmane Dembele is once again finding himself in the crosshairs at PSG, and this could be good news for Arsenal.
The Parisians suffered a chastening 3-1 defeat to Stade Rennais on Friday. Luis Enrique's men squandered several golden opportunities to score against the managerless Bretons, who recently sacked Habib Beye after five winless games across all competitions.
This surprise loss offered RC Lens the opportunity to reclaim top spot in Ligue 1 on Saturday. Naturally, the atmosphere in the PSG dressing room was tense after the match. Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele did not attempt to hide that he was frustrated with his teammates.
"I think we need to show more desire when we play for PSG," thundered. "If we play individually, we won't win the titles we want. Last season, we put the club above all else, and I think we need to get that mentality back for the second half of the season. PSG must come first, not individuals."
PSG, of course, have already squandered the chance to retain the Coupe de France. They were knocked out of the competition by Paris FC in January.
Enrique hits back at Dembele
PSG boss Luis Enrique, however, was unimpressed by Dembele's comments. He believes that post-match comments from players are "worthless," and he took exception to the attacker's insinuation that there are players at PSG who think they are bigger than the club.
"The players' opinions at the end of the match have no value. None whatsoever. Neither do the coaches' opinions, but the players' opinions have no value at all. I will not respond to any questions from any player, nor any answers from any player.
"I will never allow any player to be above the club. So that's clear. I am the person responsible for the team. I will not allow any player to think that he is more important than the club. Not me, not the sporting director, not the president, not the club.
"So, these statements are worthless. They are the result of anger after a match, and I think that's clear."
Tension at PSG
Enrique's response to Dembele comes amid reports of growing behind-the-scenes tension at PSG, pertaining to the France international's contract situation. Rumours have claimed that the 28-year-old has demanded a hefty pay rise to extend his deal, which currently runs until 2028.
President Nasser Al-Khelaifi responded to these suggestions after PSG suffered a shock loss to Sporting CP in the Champions League last month, insisting that the club's wage structure would not be altered to accommodate the demands of individual players.
"The club's policy is that there is a salary cap for players, everyone knows it, and everyone must respect it," Al-Khelaifi said. "The club is more important than anyone else."
There have been reports of increasing "unease" at PSG regarding the situation of Dembele. This has given rise to transfer speculation and claims that the Ballon d'Or winner could leave the club in the summer.
