Liverpool hijack Jeremy Jacquet transfer as Fabrizio Romano confirms €70m deal
Jeremy Jacquet will complete a sensational move to Liverpool, Fabrizio Romano has announced.
Chelsea had been leading the race for the young Frenchman for much of January, but the Reds acted decisively to agree a deal worth an estimated €70 million with the Ligue 1 side to land the young Frenchman.
Jacquet will leave Rennes to join Liverpool in the summer, becoming one of the most expensive sales in the history of the Breton side thanks to the upfront fee of €60m the Reds will pay for him.
Romano makes shock Jacquet announcement
Romano made the shock announcement on X, declaring: “Jeremy Jacquet to Liverpool, here we go! Deal agreed now for June 2026, as revealed.
“Understand fee is €60m plus €10m add-ons to Rennes. Jeremy has agreed personal terms with Liverpool.
“Agreement done for summer 2026 for one of the most talented CBs in the world.”
How Liverpool won Jacquet transfer race
Liverpool, seeking a young and powerful defender with first-team experience, were more decisive than Chelsea when it came to offering Rennes what they wanted.
As FootMercato reports: “The Reds quickly demonstrated a concrete and structured interest, positioning themselves as a credible, even preferred, competitor to the Blues.”
Talks between Liverpool and Rennes proved to be swift and efficient, with a potential club-record deal agreed for the French side.
Where it went wrong for Chelsea
Jacquet had also agreed personal terms with Chelsea, but the London club were unable to agree a fee with Rennes. For all the weeks of speculation, there was little decisive action taken by the Stamford Bridge side.
The Blues, whose hunt for a central defender has been well known, had launched a €50m bid that was rejected. The possibility of loaning him back to the Ligue 1 side until the summer was also discussed, though never formally offered in negotiations.
Chelsea are now studying the possibility of signing Tylel Tati from Rennes’ local rivals Nantes, with Ouest France suggesting that they have already had a €30m bid rejected for the 18-year-old.
