Premier League 'TANK' confirms desire to join Man Utd
Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka has revealed that he wants to play for Manchester United.
The Nigeria international is currently at the Africa Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles will face host nation Morocco in the semi-final on Wednesday evening after cruising through the knockout stages so far.
In the build-up to the match, Onyeka was approached by a local Man Utd supporter, who initially did not appear to know who the 28-year-old was. After telling the fan that he plays for Brentford, Onyeka was put on the spot and asked whether he would like to feature for the Red Devils.
“Yes, of course, I want to play for Manchester United,” the midfielder responded, which has since evoked criticism from Brentford fans on social media who believe that it is disrespectful to say this publicly.
Man Utd are looking to bring in several midfielders this year. So it begs the question, could the Red Devils actually help Onyeka achieve his dream of playing at Old Trafford?
Should Man Utd sign Onyeka?
Onyeka has 40 caps for Nigeria to his name and has been with Brentford since 2021. However, he has never managed to establish himself as an undisputed starter.
He played more minutes out on loan at Augsburg last season than he has in any of his Premier League campaigns with the Bees. This term, Onyeka has seen more action across three Carabao Cup appearances than in six outings in the league.
Onyeka put in some encouraging performances for Augsburg in 2024/25, and he certainly has admirers. Not for nothing has he been nicknamed "Frank the Tank" for his energetic, physical style of play.
However, at 28, the ball-winner does not appear to fit Man Utd's recruitment plans. Nor would he be an upgrade on the Red Devils' current options. According to data analytics firm SciSports, Onyeka would merely be a squad player for the Old Trafford outfit.
This is unsurprising given that he can barely get a game at Brentford. Keith Andrews' high-flying Bees are currently one point and two spots above seventh-placed Man Utd in the table. It seems highly unlikely that Man Utd would make a move for Onyeka.
