Manchester City have officially completed the signing of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

The England international arrives at the Etihad in an initial £20 million (€23m) deal. Man City have managed to sign one of the Premier League's best defenders for a bargain due to his contract situation.

Guehi only had six months to run on his deal at Crystal Palace, forcing the Selhurst Park club into a huge decision. They ultimately agreed to cash in on their captain instead of letting him walk away on a free.

The fallout from this decision has been monumental. On Friday, head coach Oliver Glasner announced that he would leave the club at the end of the season. The decision was already made in October, but it is believed that he went public with it on Friday because of Guehi's sale.

The following day, after a 2-1 loss to Sunderland, Glasner let loose on the Palace hierarchy, saying that he feels abandoned and virtually begging for the sack. However, the Eagles will stick with the 52-year-old for now.

Man City sign Guehi

As for City, they have pulled off an absolute January masterclass. Injuries to Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol made the signing of a defender imperative, and the Manchester giants have acted decisively.

Guehi has established himself as one of the most complete defenders in European football in recent seasons. The England star has signed a contract until 2031 at the Etihad, becoming City's second January signing after Antoine Semenyo.

"I am really happy and incredibly proud to be a Manchester City player," Guehi said after his unveiling. "This move feels like the culmination of all the hard work I have put into my career I am now at the best club in England and part of an unbelievable squad of players.

"It feels good to be able to say that. I want to grow as a player and a person, and I know at this club that's going to happen. I love football - it has given me so much for so long - and to be able to continue my development at Manchester City is a really special moment for me and my family.

"I absolutely cannot wait to get started now. I want to meet my team-mates, train hard, understand what the manager expects of me and then show the City fans what I can do."
