Liverpool AGREE deal with Mohamed Salah replacement
Liverpool have reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Dominik Szobszlai over a new contract at the club.
The Hungary midfielder has been a standout player for Arne Slot’s side since his arrival at Anfield in 2023 and he is set to be rewarded with a bumper new deal.
That is according to transfer reporter IndyKaila, who posted on X: “Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is understood to have reached an agreement in principle over a new contract at Anfield.”
The 25-year-old’s current contract at Liverpool isn’t due until expire in 2028, but the Reds have acted swiftly to agree fresh terms with the midfielder as they look to end off interest from a number of top European clubs.
Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have both been linked with a move for Szoboszlai in recent months, however Liverpool are now understood to be on the verge of finalising a new long-term deal with the Hungary star to end speculation of an Anfield exit.
Dominik Szoboszlai to sign new Liverpool contract
Szoboszlai has started 26 of Liverpool’s 27 matches in the Premier League and Champions League so far this season, registering nine goal contributions in the process, with a yellow card suspension the only reason for his absence versus Wolverhampton Wanderers in late December.
Slot has leaned on Szoboszlai’s versatility so far this campaign too, with the 25-year-old often played out of position at right-back or as a right winger. In fact, he has been deployed as a replacement for Mohamed Salah on the right flank in six of his last eight Premier League starts.
However, Szoboszlai is expected to return to a central midfield role if Liverpool are able to sign a new right winger this year, with RB Leipzig starlet Yan Diomande earmarked as one of their top targets for 2026.
While Liverpool are set to agree a new deal with the Hungarian, they aren’t expected to enjoy such luck with Ibrahima Konate, who is currently due to become a free agent when his current contract expires at the end of June.
Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi has been lined up as a potential successor to the Frenchman, although FootballTransfers understands that Manchester City are in talks over a January deal for the England international.
