Liverpool have a reason for optimism in their centre-back search.

Bayern Munich star Dayot Upamecano is said to be prepared to turn down a contract extension as he awaits an offer from Liverpool or Real Madrid, according to TeamTalk.

The French centre-back is said to have reached a verbal agreement with his club over a new deal but is now willing to back out, especially after Liverpool failed to add new Man City defender Marc Guehi.

Upamecano would replace his former RB Leipzig teammate, Ibrahima Konate, at Anfield, as Konate’s contract is set to expire this summer.

The 27-year-old Upamecano likely has more of his prime years ahead of him than the man he would partner with at Anfield, 34-year-old Virgil van Dijk.

A dream signing for Liverpool

Liverpool have suffered from a lack of focus this season, and it has manifested in the team allowing either goals in bunches or late goals that cause the Reds to drop points.

In their 3-2 loss to Bournemouth this past weekend, they allowed a 90+5’ goal from Amine Adli that consigned Liverpool to defeat.

Similar late goals have seen Liverpool drop points on multiple occasions this season.

In the last two months alone, along with Adli’s winner, Harry Wilson scored in 90+7’ in a 2-2 draw with Fulham, and Ao Tanaka found the net in 90+6’ in a 3-3 draw with Leeds.

That is on top of Liverpool’s three-match losing streak in November that saw Arne Slot’s team concede at least three goals in each game.

Upamecano has experience playing in a system similar to Liverpool’s.

Bayern Munich dominate possession, meaning the Frenchman has to cover plenty of ground, be first to clearances, and move the ball to his teammates in midfield and attack.

With nearly two tackles and 5.5 recoveries per 90 minutes, along with a pass completion rate of 92.1 percent, it appears that Upamecano would be an ideal signing for Slot’s Liverpool.
