€80m defender wants Liverpool as Guehi disaster leaves Slot reeling
Inter centre-back Alessandro Bastoni is keen to join Liverpool, who should be desperately scrambling to sign a new defender after missing out on Marc Guehi.
The Reds slumped to another hugely disappointing result on Saturday as relegation-battlers Burnley came away with a point from Anfield after Marcus Edwards cancelled out Florian Wirtz's opener.
It was bafflingly easy for Burnley to cut through Liverpool's defence for the goal. Players from the home side barely exerted any pressure on their opponents, who were able to effortlessly exploit huge gaps in the backline.
Liverpool have massive structural issues that no one player can simply fix. However, the fact that they have missed out on Marc Guehi to Man City will sting, especially considering that they were moments away from signing him in the summer.
The news of Guehi's impending move to Man City has understandably upset many Liverpool fans, and according to TEAMtalk, their club did not even try to make a move for Guehi this month. This is bizarre given how atrocious Arne Slot's backline has been this term.
Bastoni wants Liverpool
With Guehi no longer available, Liverpool are forced to explore different options. Predictably, the name of long-term target Alessandro Bastoni has cropped up again.
The Inter star has established himself as one of the best defenders in Europe in recent years, which has resulted in persistent speculation over his future, with the Reds often among the clubs linked with him.
Intriguingly, the above-mentioned report claims that Bastoni would be keen on a move to Liverpool. After winning two Scudetti with the Nerrazzuri, the 26-year-old is said to be interested in heading abroad.
However, a move in January appears to be out of the question. A transfer in the summer would also not in any way be easy to pull off. It is claimed that Inter would demand a "mammoth" fee for him, likely somewhere in the region of €80 million.
The player's desire for a new challenge could be key, though, and Liverpool would be well advised to look into the possibility of a move. Signing a new defender needs to be Slot's biggest priority. If he can't sort out his backline, he may soon be left without a job.
