Man City deal done! Fabrizio Romano says 'here we go' to wonderkid transfer
Manchester City will cut Claudio Echeverri's loan to Bayer Leverkusen short and instead send him to sister club Girona, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Argentine wonderkid's time in Europe has so far been anything but successful. Echeverri joined Man City with a sparkling reputation after coming through River Plate's academy, but game time has been limited.
The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has to date made just three senior appearances for the Cityzens. Unsurprisingly, then, the decision was made to loan him out in the summer.
This turned into quite the saga as Echeverri had a very clear idea of what type of club he wanted to join. He reportedly turned down a move to City Football Group affiliate Girona and instead ended up at Bayer Leverkusen, while AS Roma were also keen on him.
However, Echeverri has become something of a forgotten man in Germany. Leverkusen have endured a tumultuous season, and Erik ten Hag was sacked just a couple of games into the campaign. His replacement, Kasper Hjulmand, has clearly been unconvinced by the teenager.
Echeverri to join Girona after all
Echeverri played in both of Ten Hag's games, but he has since spent more time on the bench than on the pitch. Out of a possible 21 games under Hjulmand, the 19-year-old has only featured in nine. He did not even make the matchday squad for the past two Bundesliga games.
It is therefore no surprise that Man City will cut his loan short in January. According to Fabrizio Romano, Echeverri will now move to sister club Girona after all.
The struggling LaLiga side have agreed a straight six-month loan for the Argentine, so the youngster will return to Man City in the summer. Girona, chaired by Pep Guardiola's brother Pere, are currently in the relegation zone.
In Catalunya, Echeverri will link up with fellow City loanee Vitor Reis. The 19-year-old January signing has been with Girona since the summer and is a regular starter under head coach Michel.
