Celtic are showing an interest in Hibernian midfielder Josh Mulligan, according to a report.

The 23-year-old has been one of the biggest revelations of the Premiership season thus far. Mulligan snubbed interest from Rangers to join Hibs on a free transfer from boyhood club Dundee FC in the summer, and it has proved to be an inspired decision.

The midfielder has been a mainstay in David Gray's side, contributing with three goals and three assists in 26 appearances across all competitions. His latest assist came in Hibs' impressive 3-2 derby win over league leaders Hearts.

This result kept the distance between Hearts and Celtic at three points, in turn giving the Parkhead club the opportunity to pull level with a win over Motherwell on Tuesday evening.

Mulligan's performances have attracted big-name attention. Earlier this month, Foot Mercato reported that clubs from Ligue 1, the Bundesliga and the Premier League are keeping tabs on him with a view to a potential January move.

Celtic also in for Mulligan

It was claimed that Mulligan has an affordable release clause in his deal, which allows suitors to bypass Hibs and snap him up without having to negotiate a fee. Naturally, the Edinburgh club are desperate to keep hold of their playmaker.

The Daily Mail has now added Celtic to the Scotland hopeful's long list of admirers. Mulligan, who was called up to his country's squad for the first time in October, has been added to Wilfried Nancy's shortlist.

The report makes no mention of a release clause and notes that Mulligan is under contract until 2029, which only adds to Hibs' reluctance to let him go mid-season.

Celtic's interest in the 23-year-old makes it clear that Nancy is planning a complete overhaul of the squad he inherited from Brendan Rodgers. While strengthening the defence and attack were already known to be priorities for the Frenchman, it is now evident that he also wants to beef up his midfield options.

Nancy has already confirmed that he wants to sign players with "personality." He recently said: “It is important that when you sign players, they need to have personality. This is a big club. To play here is not always easy."
