Celtic suffered a fifth defeat in seven games on Tuesday, and manager Wilfried Nancy caused a stir with his post-match comments.

The Frenchman's start to life at Parkhead could hardly have begun less auspiciously. Nancy lost his first four games in charge, including the League Cup final to St. Mirren, and his side suffered a fresh setback against Motherwell on Tuesday.

Celtic were thoroughly outplayed by the Premiership's fourth-placed side at Fir Park, with a 2-0 loss undoing much of the promise shown in wins against Aberdeen and Livingston.

Nancy is now once again under intense pressure. Calls for his sacking are growing louder and, to make matters worse, Celtic's next game is a crunch Old Firm derby versus Danny Rohl's resurgent Rangers.

It is widely believed that a defeat to the Ibrox side on home soil will be the final nail in Nancy's coffin, but supporters already want to see the 48-year-old sacked before a ball is even kicked due to the nature of the Motherwell performance and his post-match comments.

Nancy 'not surprised' by Motherwell loss

The Frenchman raised eyebrows when he suggested that he was "not surprised" by Celtic's loss to the Steelmen. "It is not a surprise," he said. "I know where we are. I know what we have to improve. I know also the team we faced. This is tough, but it’s the reality.

"We will get better because there are certain things we need to improve. At certain moments, we have to be more difficult to beat. We faced a good team. When I watched the game at Celtic Park, they also played really well. Tonight, we didn’t create too much."

Naturally, this has not gone down well with supporters - or the media - given the calibre of players Celtic have. Losing five games in seven is simply unacceptable for a manager at Parkhead.

There is no denying that Motherwell were brilliant, but this was their first home win over the Hoops since 2013, illustrating that this is anything but an ordinary result. Alan Hutton summed up the bizarre reality of the situation with this succinct comment: "Celtic want to play the way Motherwell did."

With this loss, Celtic spurned the chance to go level on points with league leaders Hearts. The contrast between Celtic and Rangers couldn't be more stark right now after Rohl's side managed to climb within three points of their rivals by defeating St. Mirren.

The German has instilled confidence in the Ibrox side, and they are raring to go for the Old Firm. “Yes, the belief is there that we can win games," he said after beating the Saints.

"When I took over the group, the belief to win games was not so high. But you look in the dressing room now, and they ask, 'When is the next game?' This is great!"

A win on Saturday would see Rangers go level - it could seal Nancy's fate at Celtic.
