Five Arsenal players who could leave in January
Arsenal are hoping this is the year where they finally break their title drought and win the Premier League after three successive seasons of finishing as runners up.
Mikel Arteta’s side top the Premier League ahead of the January transfer window and the Gunners finally feel confident in their squad after investing nearly €300 million on players during the summer.
However, after making just €10m through sales, such a vast difference will likely require players to be sold in the coming months to balance the books and FootballTransfers explores five players who could leave Arsenal in January.
Gabriel Jesus
Perhaps the most likely sale Arsenal could make in January would be that of Gabriel Jesus, with the forward likely to find himself on the fringes of Arteta’s team after returning from injury.
Jesus suffered a serious knee injury in January but returned to full training at the start of December and the Brazilian will be desperate to build up fitness ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
However, Arsenal are understood to be open to Jesus’ sale for the right price, while player himself has admitted he would be keen to return to former club Palmeiras and a loan deal could be agreed to get 28-year-old some much-needed game time.
Ben White
Ben White had only missed one Premier League game for Arsenal in two years prior to the start of last season but the defender has since played just 20 league matches in 18 months since after falling down the pecking order in recent times.
The 28-year-old has played just three times in the league this season for Arsenal despite injuries at centre-back, while Jurrien Timber’s reliability and form has meant Arteta has felt no need to rotate at right-back.
While Arsenal are unlikely to want to sell White mid-season due to their increasing number of injuries in defence, their hand may be forced if the Englishman pushes for an exit in search of regular first team football, which he is certainly capable of finding.
Leandro Trossard
Leandro Trossard has been one Arsenal’s most reliable and important players since his €24m million arrival from Brighton three years ago, and that has not changed this season with four goals and three assists in just eight Premier League starts.
However, Trossard has mainly seen game time due to Noni Madueke’s injury but, with the summer signing now back, the Belgian has since returned to the bench to provide impact as a substitute.
Trossard remains a pivotal performer for Arsenal but his contract expires in 18 months and, having considered offers for him in the summer, the Gunners may be tempted to cash in on the 31-year-old if a bid comes in that is too good to turn down, albeit at a risk to their title credentials.
Ethan Nwaneri
Having only signed a new five-year contract in August, there is no danger of Ethan Nwaneri being sold by Arsenal any time soon even with strong interest from the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.
However, while the 18-year-old made 26 Premier League appearances last season, including 11 starts, Nwaneri has only played 166 minutes this year, all from the bench.
Arteta perhaps feels as though it would be unfair to throw Nwaneri in at the deep end and rely on the youngster in a title race, suggesting a loan move could be arranged in January to ensure the attacking midfielder continues to develop without too much pressure.
Gabriel Martinelli
Arsenal invested €125m into Madueke and Eberechi Eze during the summer to strengthen their wide options, hinting that Arteta felt an upgrade was needed on Gabriel Martinelli after a period of inconsistency from the 24-year-old.
Martinelli scored 15 Premier League goals in the 2022/23 campaign but it has taken the Brazilian another two-and-a-half seasons to reach that total since despite being relied on heavily last season.
This year, Martinelli has mainly featured from the bench and interest from Saudi Arabia could pave the way for Arsenal to balance their books with a lucrative sale for a player who has proven to be replaceable despite displaying significant potential over the years.
