Arsenal 'temptation too strong': Signing could create Lewis-Skelly problem
AC Milan may find it difficult to resist the "temptation" to cash in on Davide Bartesaghi, but a move to Arsenal would raise questions over Myles Lewis-Skelly's future.
The Italian youngster has been one of the breakout stars of the current Serie A season. Milan signed Pervis Estupinian to replace Theo Hernandez in the summer, but Bartesaghi has overtaken the new recruit in the pecking order.
The left wing-back scored his first two senior goals when he notched a brace against Sassuolo earlier this month, and his emergence has not gone unnoticed outside of Italy.
Bartesaghi has been on the radar of Premier League clubs for a while. Arsenal, in particular, have been heavily linked with the 19-year-old. The Gunners are reportedly also interested in Milan's reserve goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani.
Arsenal director Andrea Berta is set to welcome Napoli chief scout Maurizio Micheli to his recruitment department, which seems to have had the effect of firmly shifting the North London club's attention to Serie A.
AC Milan could cash in on Bartesaghi
According to journalist Carlo Pellegatti, Milan may find it difficult to resist the temptation of cashing in on Bartesaghi, given that the homegrown would represent pure profit to the Rossoneri.
“What’s worrying me today is the Bartesaghi situation, because I’ve read that English teams, Arsenal above all, are closely monitoring Bartesaghi," he said. "My fear is that if English sirens were to go off about Bartesaghi, with the potential capital gain, the temptation would be too strong.”
Of course, Arsenal are already well-stocked in the left-back department, so Bartesaghi's arrival would raise major questions over the future of Myles Lewis-Skelly, who has been limited to Carabao Cup and Champions League starts so far this season.
His lack of Premier League action has sparked the interest of clubs ahead of the January window, but it is unlikely that Arsenal will look to offload the 19-year-old, especially as he only recently signed a new long-term contract.
Nevertheless, the arrival of a player like Bartesaghi would cause a potential problem. A solution could be to move Lewis-Skelly into the midfield, which is where he started his career.
