Ruben Amorim receives massive wonderkid boost for January
Ruben Amorim's chances of keeping Kobbie Mainoo in January have been boosted as Napoli may be moving onto another midfield target.
Napoli will definitely sign a top central midfielder in the winter market after long-term injuries suffered by Kevin de Bruyne and Frank Anguissa.
Until now, Man Utd outcast Mainoo had been Napoli's number one target on loan - with the midfielder keen himself to make the move.
However, United have consistently maintained their stance that Mainoo is not available with Amorim himself desperate to keep the wonderkid.
Napoli move on from Mainoo
And Amorim has been boosted by a report from Florian Plettenberg that Napoli are now moving for another young midfield target.
Plettenberg says that Napoli "have concrete interest in Johan Manzambi Johan Manzambi of Freiburg.
The Swiss star is only 20 and has been a breakout star for Freiburg this season.
He is under contract until 2030 with no release clause but Napoli are pushing for him.
As for Mainoo, he is unhappy about the lack of playing time he is getting under Ruben Amorim and has made it clear to United chiefs he wants a dry loan until the end of the season.
Napoli have been considered favourites having been keen on signing him in the last days of the summer window, only to be told by Man Utd he was not available.
Aston Villa, Newcastle, Real Madrid and Barcelona are all said to be interested also.
The midfielder is frustrated that he has only started 12 of Ruben Amorim's 36 Premier League games in charge at United.
And he is pushing for a loan move for the second half of the season in order to aid his development and to try and get back into the England squad for the World Cup.
Mainoo was not part of Thomas Tuchel's latest squad due to a lack of minutes at United.
The England midfielder has been a substitute in every single Premier League game this season. He only started the EFL Cup defeat to Grimsby.
Mainoo has made 79 appearances for Man Utd since his senior debut in 2022-23 and has also been capped 10 times by England, playing at Euro 2024.
