Not O'Neill: Celtic to FINALISE managerial appointment 'this weekend'
Celtic are looking to finalise the appointment of Columbus Crew head coach Wilfried Nancy this weekend, according to a report.
The Hoops' search for a new manager has entered the final stages, and a decision is imminent. Martin O'Neill has been in interim charge of Celtic since the resignation of Brendan Rodgers, but the 73-year-old is unlikely to remain in the job beyond the international break.
O'Neill admitted that his future is unclear when speaking to BBC Ulster about whether he would oversee the Parkhead club's next game. “The short and honest answer is I genuinely do not know," he said.
“I am not party to anything that is happening with the board talking to prospective clients and things like this, nor do I want to be because that’s never been a remit of mine.
“The gentlemen involved can very easily make up their own minds about people without me interfering in any aspect. I said that I would do it until they found that replacement."
Celtic find new head coach
According to the Daily Record, Celtic have now found their man in Columbus Crew boss Wilfried Nancy, who became the bookmakers' favourite for the job earlier this week.
The report states that the 48-year-old has been majority shareholder Dermot Desmond's preferred candidate since Rodgers' resignation, and that he is fully sold on the job.
Talks with the Frenchman are set to be finalised this weekend, and buying him out of his contract is not expected to be an issue. Nancy is unlikely to command a compensation higher than £2 million.
Celtic want to have Nancy in the dugout for their clash against St. Mirren after the international break. Former Ireland youth international Kwame Ampadu, father of Leeds midfielder Ethan Ampadu, is expected to follow Nancy to Glasgow as his assistant.
Nancy won MLS Cup with the Crew in 2023 and was belatedly named MLS Coach of the Year in 2024 after being snubbed in 2022 and 2023. He reached the final of the rebranded CONCACAF Champions League (Champions Cup) and won Leagues Cup with the Crew in 2024.
He finished seventh with the Ohio club in the Eastern Conference this year, but was knocked out by state rivals FC Cincinnati in the first round of the playoffs, after which he questioned MLS's new best-of-three system, as his side had scored more goals than Cincy over the three games.
