Manchester United are close to completing their first major piece of January business, with Joshua Zirkzee having agreed to make a loan move to Roma.

Zirkzee’s opportunities have been few and far between at Old Trafford this season, with his first Premier League start coming in Monday’s 1-0 loss against Everton.

He wants to leave to enhance his chances of making the Netherlands World Cup squad, but there remains some doubt over whether United will sanction a move.

Head coach Ruben Amorim is concerned about the lack of options he has in his squad and did not give a deal the green light in the summer, when both Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo were pushing to leave temporarily.

Now Gazzetta dello Sport reports that a fresh offer has arrived from Serie A – and the former Bologna hitman is eager to make it.

Joshua Zirkzee to Roma: Man Utd learn the terms of the offer

Roma have made a fresh offer to Man Utd for Zirkzee, the Italian source reports. They have proposed a loan move that would become permanent if they qualify for the Champions League.

With the 24-year-old having agreed to make the move, it is claimed that Zirkzee is “closer” to completing a deal.

It is a move that may hinge on Man Utd finding a replacement.

Roma watching €40m striker

Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini is a fan of the former Bayern Munich youngster. During his previous stint on the bench of Atalanta, he tried to sign the player.

United have been told that the Italians have other offensive options on the table, though. Franculino, the Guinea striker who plays for Midtjylland, is being closely watched by Roma after having had a €40 million price tag on him.

Gasperini will get a closer look at the Tottenham target when the Danes visit Rome on Europa League business on Thursday.
