Man Utd submit opening bid for €100m midfielder
Manchester United have reportedly submitted their opening bid for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton ahead of the upcoming winter transfer window.
The England international, who was included in Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI against Albania on Sunday, has been earmarked as a key midfield target by the Old Trafford hierarchy and the Red Devils are keen to finalise a deal in January.
Wharton has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best young players since his arrival at Crystal Palace in January 2024 and Man Utd have added him to a transfer shortlist that includes both Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest) and Carlos Baleba (Brighton & Hove Albion).
Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid are also understood to be monitoring Wharton’s development at Selhurst Park, but Man Utd are determined to win the race for his signature.
In fact, the Red Devils have now ramped up their pursuit of the Englishman by lodging an official offer to Crystal Palace.
That is according to transfer reporter IndyKaila, who posted on X: “My contact at the club [Man Utd] is telling me that a bid has been submitted for Adam Wharton. Ruben Amorim loves the player and believes he can sell the project to Adam before Liverpool contact the player.”
It has previously been reported that Wharton could cost as much as €100 million next summer, with Crystal Palace eager to extract the maximum fee possible, although his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently stands at €62.1m.
Adam Wharton responds to Man Utd interest
Although Man Utd are eager to finalise a deal for Wharton, the England star recently confirmed that he remains focused on performing for Crystal Palace.
“I don't really look into it or think too much about it,” Wharton told The Athletic when asked about interest from Man Utd and other top Premier League teams.
“There are always rumours floating about on social media. Is it true? Is it not? You tell me.
“My friends, my family, my brothers, everyone will message me and be like, ‘Is it true this club's interested?’ I'm like, ‘Thanks for telling me because I didn't know.’
“I don't know who's spreading it or who at United is looking at it. I see it and I'm like, ‘OK’, and then I carry on with my day.
“United, the big teams, they're all linked to 10, 20 different players. If I'm one of 20, then it's nothing special, so it doesn't really mean too much. I speak with my agent about planning ahead and possibilities.
“But at the end of the day, it is who's interested and who's willing to try and get you and if that becomes the case?
“You can speak about it, but you've got to represent that on the pitch and prove that you deserve it.”
