Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has urged club captain Marc Guehi to stay until the summer after admitting that he was 'basically there' when discussing his collapsed Liverpool transfer.

The Eagles' captain is expected to be one of the marquee names in the 2026 January and summer windows as his departure from the Selhurst Park club has already been confirmed by head coach Oliver Glasner.

Guehi is on an expiring contract and has no intention of extending. This summer, he was on the verge of joining Liverpool, but the deal collapsed at the last minute because Crystal Palace failed to bring in a suitable replacement.

Links with Liverpool have continued to be rampant, especially in light of their dreadful defensive performances this season, but there is no guarantee that Guehi will pick the Reds next year.

Starting from January, the centre-back will be able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs, while Liverpool could return with a bid to bring him in immediately. Whether Palace would accept a mid-season departure of their captain is a different question.

Wharton: I hope Guehi stays until the summer

Speaking to The Athletic, Guehi's teammate Adam Wharton, himself linked with Liverpool and a host of giants, has urged the 25-year-old not to jump ship in the winter.

“There’s obviously so much speculation,” he said. “I think it’s pretty obvious. I think it came out that he wasn’t going to sign a new deal. I think, obviously, he’s a top defender. You’ve seen it week in, week out in the Premier League. You’ve seen it at the Euros and after that for England.

“So I mean, he’s so consistent. You see it in training. Well, I see it in training every day as well. So down to earth as well. He never gets carried away. And yeah, he could literally go to any club in the world, for me, and be starting comfortably.

“It’s probably just where he goes. And when. If he goes in January or in the summer, who knows? I hope he stays until summer so we can have him for a bit longer! We’ll have to see.”

Wharton also admitted that it was unexpected that Guehi did not end up at Liverpool in the summer. “People were probably shocked that he didn’t go. Because it was all over, he was going, he was basically there. I think it was after Villa.

"We pretty much thought he was gone after that, or I did at least. And then yeah, it ended up collapsing, and then it was just back to normal. But that’s just the type of guy Marc is.

"He’s not going to complain, and he won’t show his frustrations. He just gets on with it and just shows the type of professional he is. If you looked at his performances, you couldn’t tell that he’d just had a move taken away from him at the last second. That’s just credit to him.”
