Liverpool are ready to make transfer history once again in the January window by launching a world-record bid.

Arne Slot’s side made history during the summer, spending more than any club previously in a single transfer window. In doing that, the Anfield side twice broke the British transfer record, first to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and then to snap up Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.

Although neither of these big-money deals have paid off yet, the Reds are undeterred when it comes to smashing ceilings in the transfer market and are ready to break the record for a centre-back by signing Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan.

Liverpool are ready to bid €100 million for the 26-year-old Italy international defender, Fichajes reports.

The current transfer record for a defender is the €90m that Manchester City spent on Josko Gvardiol in 2023 to sign him from RB Leipzig.

Slot’s side are ready to smash this figure as they look for reinforcements in the middle of their defence, having missed out on Marc Guehi on Deadline Day in the summer and have seen Giovanni Leoni struck by serious injury.

Why is Bastoni so valuable?

Bastoni stands in line to become the first €100m defender – a status that would write him into footballing history.

Liverpool’s desire to sign him is summed up by Fichajes, which states:

“Bastoni offers a well-rounded profile: strong in one-on-one situations, clean ball distribution, and European experience.”

FootballTransfers’ unique algorithm gives Bastoni an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €78.7m while data analytics firm SciSports rates him as one of the outstanding defenders in Serie A so far this season.

A player who is accomplished in possession, he would seem to tick the boxes that Slot and Liverpool are looking for as they seek to produce a front-foot team capable of regaining the Premier League and competing for top honours in Europe.
