Mo Salah faces fresh criticism as STARTLING Liverpool wage information leaked
Mo Salah is coming under fresh criticism on two fronts at Liverpool while startling information about the wage bill at Anfield has been leaked.
Salah signed a new contract with Liverpool in the spring and was supposed to be the centrepiece of Arne Slot’s project for the 2025/26 season but has instead become a “problem” for the team.
The Egypt international, who FootballTransfers revealed will leave Liverpool next summer, has failed to live up to the heights of last season and now stands accused of holding his team-mates back.
Florian Wirtz, it is claimed, is particularly suffering due to Salah.
“It's striking how he's neglected Wirtz and hasn't made the most of the other summer signings, whose combined cost is close to half a billion euros. Salah has provided three assists this season, all leading to goals for players who have been at the club longer. Salah is becoming an increasingly significant problem for both Liverpool and Wirtz,” Sport Bild claims in a blistering attack on the Liverpool great.
It adds: “He is the king of champions but is seemingly blocking their promising new start. And, consequently, his successor at the head of the attack: Wirtz, signed for €140m.
“There is no doubt Wirtz is destined to be the leader of the future. The question is: who will dethrone Salah? The manager, the clubs or his team-mates? It seems entirely possible that Salah will move to Saudi Arabia in the summer of 2026.”
Salah also faces criticism from some African outlets, who feel that he should have been present at the African Player of the Year award, which was won by Achraf Hakimi in Rabat on Wednesday. His absence has been seen as disrespectful.
How Liverpool plan to handle spiralling wage bill
Liverpool’s wage bill has exploded this summer with the signings of Wirtz and Alexander Isak, not to mention Salah’s contract extension, along with that of Virgil van Dijk.
The Reds are dealing with this by striking a series of commercial partnerships, which David Powell, infoRED founder, explained will become more commonplace on The Anfield Wrap podcast.
He said: “Every other week there seems to be a commercial partnership being pulled out because it’s so important because other things will decline in the future like broadcast revenue.
“So, clubs will need to continue to pay big wages, because Liverpool’s wage bill when the next accounts come out is going to be £400 million plus.
“It’s a lot of money, and John Henry used to say to baseball fans at the Red Sox winter bowl (before he got heckled for it) that baseball players and football players are expensive – and they are not going to get any cheaper.
“So we’re going to see more and more commercial deals. If we think last year the commercial revenue was around 308 million, it’s probably going to be close to 350 million this time.”
