One of Arsenal’s forgotten stars has admitted he will speak to the Gunners about returning to his former club after seeing his career setback significantly in the past year.

Gabriel Jesus has recently resumed training after suffering a serious knee injury in January but there have been question marks over his long-term future at the Emirates after the arrival of forwards such as Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke in the summer.

The speculation had seen the player’s former side Palmeiras make a public plea for Jesus to ‘come home’ and the 28-year-old has admitted his ‘wish’ is to return to his boyhood club one day, although his immediate future is still with Arsenal.

“There was never contact with another club. My wish, as I always say, is to return to Palmeiras. And Palmeiras also want me to come back,” Jesus told Brazilian magazine Placar.

“When I feel it’s the right time to go back to Palmeiras, I’ll decide that with Arsenal,” he added. “But we’re talking about a player who has been out for nine months and is now fighting to return to the team. Some journalists speak without any basis.”

“After such a complex surgery, it makes no sense for me to leave the club now.”

Jesus set to be given chance to save Arsenal career

Arsenal had considered selling Jesus in January but Mikel Arteta has since rubbished any speculation of a sale, insisting he wants to keep the forward at the club.

Jesus had already come under fire for his performances prior to his injury, having scored just seven goals in his previous 44 Premier League appearances.

However, while the Brazilian’s minutes may be reduced upon his return due to the arrival of Gyokeres, Arsenal are still missing Kai Havertz and Madueke through injury and the return of Jesus could come at the perfect time for Arteta.

Arsenal have not put a timeline on Jesus’ return but, with the ex-Manchester City star back in training, there will be optimism that he can make his comeback in the coming weeks ahead of the intense festive period.
