Barcelona legend Jordi Alaba has announced that he will retire at the end of Inter Miami's season, to be replaced by ex-Man Utd defender Sergio Reguilon.

The Spaniard revealed his decision with a video on his social media channels. Alba becomes the second key Inter Miami star to announce his retirement after midfielder Sergio Busquets.

The two were long-time Barcelona teammates before following fellow Blaugrana legend Lionel Messi to Miami in 2023. Unlike the Argentine attacker, Alba and Busquets will not extend their expiring contracts with the MLS franchise.

36-year-old Alba has been in inspired form this season. Despite his advanced age, the defender has been almost ever-present for the Herons in 2025, making 44 appearances to date.

Alba has recorded an impressive seven goals and 11 assists. A European champion with Spain and Barcelona, the six-time LaLiga winner will go down as one of the finest left-backs in the history of the sport.

Alba makes way for Reguilon

Alba's decision to hang up his boots at the end of the season will not come as a surprise to Inter Miami bosses, considering that they already have a replacement in the pipeline.

Spanish left-back Sergio Reguilon is set to join the MLS side as a free agent after winning the Europa League with Tottenham last season. The 28-year-old was released by Spurs following their triumph and has been without a club since.

Reguilon came through the Real Madrid academy and impressed on loan at Sevilla in 2019/20, which prompted Tottenham to spend €30 million on him. However, his move to North London didn't work out, and he was sent on loan to Atletico Madrid, Man Utd and Brentford.

The situation with Reguilon and Alba is akin to that of Busquets and Rodrigo de Paul, who joined on a loan deal with a purchase option in the summer.

Miami couldn't sign De Paul permanently from Atletico Madrid because Busquets occupied one of the club's Designated Player (DP) spots. However, with the Barcelona legend retiring, the Argentine will be signed on a DP deal in the winter.
