Rangers add treble-winning former player to manager shortlist
Rangers are considering former player Kevin Muscat as a potential replacement for Russell Martin, according to Sky Sports.
The Ibrox club are in the final stages of appointing a new head coach following the sacking of Martin ahead of the international break in the wake of a 1-1 draw.
Over the past two days, there has been a major twist in Rangers' coaching hunt, with the initial favourite, Steven Gerrard, surprisingly removing his name from contention despite positive talks.
Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl is now believed to be the frontrunner for the job, having left club bosses impressed during discussions last week. The 36-year-old was also in the frame before Martin's appointment.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano expects an 'imminent' resolution, but there is still no final decision in favour of Rohl. Rangers are still looking at all potential options, and a familiar face is in the running as well.
Rangers looking at Muscat
According to Sky Sports, former Gers star Kevin Muscat is also a name under consideration by the Ibrox club. The 52-year-old won the treble with Rangers as a player in the 2002/03 season and has been frequently linked with a return to the club in recent years.
The English-born former Australia international has enjoyed a hugely successful coaching career to date, winning the domestic league titles in Australia with Melbourne Victory, Japan with Yokohama F.Marinos and China with Shanghai Port.
Muscat has been in charge of Shanghai since 2023 and is looking to retain his 2024 championship. His side are currently two points clear at the top of the Chinese Super League with four games left to play.
Muscat's only coaching spell on European soil, at Sint-Truiden in Belgium, ended unceremoniously after just six months, so there may be a sense of unfinished business for the former Rangers star.
However, it currently does not appear as though Muscat is ahead of Rohl, with Sky Germany also confirming reports from the UK that the 36-year-old is the favourite as things stand.
