Napoli are already working on a January move for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, according to a report.

The 20-year-old continues to be overlooked by Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim, which is only serving to increase his desire for a change of scenery. Already in the summer, Mainoo attempted to engineer a loan move away from Man Utd to get regular minutes ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The Red Devils, however, refused to grant him his wish, and this is massively damaging his prospects of getting into Thomas Tuchel's team. So far, Mainoo has played just 113 minutes of Premier League football.

Unsurprisingly, he continues to agitate for a loan move away. The young midfielder wants to leave his boyhood club in January, and reigning Serie A champions Napoli are believed to be at the front of the queue for him.

The Italian giants have had great success with the signings of Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund from Man Utd. Mainoo could follow his former teammates to Serie A because there is an immediate need for him in Naples.

Napoli 'working on' Mainoo deal

Napoli will most likely be without reliable midfielder Frank Anguissa, who is expected to be part of Cameroon's squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, which will take place in Morocco between 21 December and 18 January.

According to Italian market expert Emanuele Cammaroto, Napoli are already working to find out if Man Utd would be willing to sanction a loan move with a permanent element attached or if they would have to find a different formula.

Intriguingly, Cammaroto insists that signing Mainoo is not an absolute priority for Napoli right now. They first want to find a long-term successor to right-back Giovanni di Lorenzo before shifting their focus to the midfield.

"The Africa Cup of Nations ends on 18 January, the transfer window opens on 1 January, and it's not easy to secure a signing in that area of the pitch right away," the journalist told Radio Punto Zero.

"Right now, the spotlight is on Di Lorenzo's deputy, whom Napoli wants to sign to strengthen the right flank between the present and the future. The strong temptation is to sign Mainoo, but we need to understand whether United are open to a loan with an option to buy. The parties are working on it."
