Good news for Liverpool as Marc Guehi makes January decision
Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is unlikely to agree a pre-contract with a foreign club in January, according to a report.
The England star remains the subject of intense speculation after his proposed summer transfer to Liverpool collapsed at the final hurdle. Out of contract in 2026, Guehi will be able to freely choose his new club next year.
Liverpool are still interested in the Crystal Palace defender, but their failure to sign him in the summer has the potential to cause problems in the future, as only non-English clubs will be able to negotiate a pre-contract with Guehi in January.
His availability has already attracted a host of European giants who view him as a perfect market opportunity. Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid have all been credited with an interest in him in recent days.
Liverpool, of course, could technically sign Guehi in January by paying a transfer fee for him, but Palace will surely be reluctant to lose their captain mid-season. Moreover, the player himself looks to have no interest in a winter move.
Guehi won't think about January transfer
According to Sky Sports reporter Mark McAdam, Guehi is unlikely to give a January move much thought and will instead make a decision on his next move later, which could work in Liverpool's favour given that they had a full agreement with him this summer.
"January would mark the final opportunity Crystal Palace would have to make some money before seeing their captain leave on a free in the summer," McAdam said.
"There is still a chance they persuade him to stay. They did it with Michael Olise [in 2023], why can't they do it with Guehi? But it's fair to say he won't be short of offers. In fact, they are all queuing up now, speaking with his representatives to see what a deal could look like.
"On January 1st, he can sign a pre-contract agreement with a club outside the Premier League. Every big club will want him. He’s a captain, he’s a leader, he’s proven he can win silverware. He will probably be a key member of Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad in the summer, and he's at the right age where he is not yet at his peak as a central defender.
"In terms of his position, he will be thinking of one thing and one thing only: Crystal Palace. He won't be thinking about a move in January. He'll be thinking, 'if I play well from now until May, I will get huge money, a huge club and a huge opportunity to play at the highest level.'"
