Gary Neville being PUSHED to replace Ruben Amorim as Man Utd manager
Gary Neville has been tipped by his former player Manuel Negredo to replace Ruben Amorim and become the shock new manager of Manchester United.
Amorim is at risk of losing his job at Old Trafford after a disastrous start to the season which sees United languishing in 10th position with a minus goal difference.
There have been reports that Amorim is imminently at risk of the sack, with the likes of Gareth Southgate, Xavi, Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner among the favourites to replace him.
But former Man City striker Negredo, who played under Neville during his disastrous short spell as manager of Valencia, believes that the former right back could be the right man to resurrect United.
What did Negredo say?
"It also depends on the situation at Manchester United," Negredo told Coin Poker.
"I think he (Neville) was a very important player for Manchester United. He's a player who gave a lot to English football.
"Perhaps, similar to Valencia at that time, it's a United team who haven't been consistently at the top for a long time, and perhaps now wouldn't be the best moment.
"But it is also true that changes come when the team is not in a good moment.
"I would try because, as I say, as a coach, I did like him.
"Perhaps in Spain at that time, due to the language barrier, he didn't get more opportunities, but in the Premier League, I would have given him more, based on my experience. For me, he was a good coach who, as I said, came with a very good attitude and desire to improve.
"He had been a player, so he also possesses knowledge of the football world. These are decisions that perhaps he didn't want to continue experiencing, and he hasn't had the opportunity to continue coaching."
The appointment of Neville certainly would come as a shock.
The 50-year-old has not been in management for almost a decade following a dismal spell at Valencia where he was sacked after less than four months having taken three months to win a league game.
As for Amorim, he has struggled at Man Utd to replicate the job he done at Sporting Lisbon.
As coach of Sporting Lisbon, he led the team to five trophies - including two Portuguese Primeira Liga titles.
He also helped develop a host of talented players, including new Arsenal signing Viktor Gyokeres.
But Amorim has failed badly to replicate his success at Sporting at Man Utd.
United finished the 2024-25 season in 15th position, failed to win a trophy and endured arguably the worst campaign in the club's history for over 50 years.
The 40-year-old has one of the worst win percentages in Man Utd's history and the poor start to the new season which sees them well off the pace in the Premier League and knocked out of the EFL Cup by fourth division Grimsby has only added to the pressure.
