Arsenal send €200m superstar to Barcelona
Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez is one step closer to joining Barcelona after his side were thrashed by Arsenal in the Champions League, according to Spanish media.
The Argentina international moved to Madrid's capital from Man City last year after growing frustrated with his lack of starts in meaningful games. He joined Atletico Madrid in a whopping €75 million deal that is believed to be capable of rising to as high as €95m.
So far, the 25-year-old has certainly performed like a marquee signing. In 68 games at Atleti, Alvarez has scored a respectable 36 goals and provided 11 assists.
The 2022 World Cup winner is widely regarded as one of the best strikers in Europe. As such, Alvarez understandably has ambitions of regularly challenging for silverware. However, this is proving difficult at Atleti.
Despite spending lavishly on new signings to give their star striker a team capable of going toe-to-toe with Europe's elite, the Rojiblancos are struggling to be competitive. Despite demolishing rivals Real Madrid 5-2 last month, they are only fourth in LaLiga.
Arsenal defeat pushes Alvarez out the door
On Tuesday, Atleti were comprehensively defeated by Arsenal in the Champions League, suffering a chastening 4-0 loss in North London. Alvarez looked dejected after the game, and Sport reports that the striker is growing increasingly unhappy.
The season is still long, but Atleti already look incapable of challenging for LaLiga or Champions League glory, which is making Alvarez seriously think about his future at the club.
Barcelona are well-known admirers of him and the Catalan outlet claims that the Arsenal game has pushed the Argentine 'closer' to the Blaugrana. It is, however, acknowledged that Alvarez won't actively entertain a move until next summer.
Given that Alvarez wasn't too fond of the English weather at Man City, he would surely prefer to stay in the warmer climes of Spain if he were to leave. Barcelona, for their part, need a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
A move to the Camp Nou would be a massive financial operation - the kind the Catalans are currently unable to pull off. He has a €500m release clause, and it is believed that Atleti would demand around €150m to €200m for him.
Barcelona can't pay that and would have to rely on the player's desire to leave to push his price down. It is claimed that Barcelona could go as high as €100m for Alvarez, but they would also have to include players in the deal to free up financial resources.
