Free agent striker Patrick Bamford is finalising a surprising move to LaLiga outfit Getafe after his unceremonious axing by Leeds United.

The former Chelsea prospect has experienced an up-and-down career that has been increasingly plagued by injuries. After several loan stints away from the Blues, he joined Middlesbrough in 2017 before moving to Leeds a year later.

It was at Elland Road where he enjoyed his best times as a footballer. The 32-year-old twice won the Championship with Leeds and scored 60 times in 205 competitive appearances. He was even capped once by England in 2021.

However, much like his replacement at Leeds, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, the striker has seen his promising career stunted by repeated fitness problems. Last year, he missed 16 games, ultimately sealing his fate.

Leeds boss Daniel Farke bluntly admitted over the summer that Bamford had no place in his plans for the current season and encouraged him to find a new club. The veteran failed to find a new employer, however, prompting a mutual contract termination in late August.

Bamford set for Getafe move

After almost a month of free agency, Bamford is now on the verge of returning to the game. According to transfer insider Matteo Moretto, the 32-year-old is finalising a surprising move to Getafe.

The Madrid-based minnows, who helped disgraced former Man Utd forward Mason Greenwood revive his career, will be Bamford's first club outside of England in his career.

Getafe are coming off a chastening summer window in which they were forced to sell several of their best players due to LaLiga's stringent financial regulations, despite seemingly being in a fairly healthy financial position compared to other clubs in the division.

The Spanish side have a tiny squad of just 21 senior players, with their only recognised centre-forward being Borja Mayoral. Bamford will therefore be a welcome reinforcement for opinion-dividing manager Jose Bordalas.

This move is reminiscent of Oli McBurnie's shock transfer to Las Palmas last summer. His adventure in Spain only lasted a season, though, and he now plays for Hull in the Championship.
