Man Utd quoted €60m price tag for perfect Ruben Amorim signing
Manchester United will have to pay 'more than €60 million' to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher next year, according to Spanish media.
The England international has emerged as a target for the Red Devils in recent weeks. Man Utd made a last-minute approach for him in the summer, but Atletico Madrid rebuffed the loan offer with the explanation that only a permanent exit would be sanctioned.
Links with the former Chelsea star continue to abound, however, as Man Utd failed to strengthen their midfield in the previous window despite it having been one of Ruben Amorim's priorities.
The Portuguese has been unequivocal that he wants more 'intensity' in his engine room. Gallagher, who is a workhorse in the most positive sense of the term, would offer exactly that, as he showcased over the weekend.
Mundo Deportivo points out that the 25-year-old was one of the few positives in what was otherwise a disappointing Atletico Madrid outing against Mallorca. Gallagher only came on as a substitute, but his energy and work rate left a big impression in Sunday's 1-1 draw.
Man Utd quoted Gallagher price
The report adds that this is an 'important season' for Gallagher because he wants to be part of Thomas Tuchel's England squad at the 2026 World Cup. To keep his place in the Three Lions side, he obviously has to play regularly.
This hasn't always been possible in the Spanish capital, with Diego Simeone often preferring other options despite rating Gallagher highly. His lack of a starting role is likely what made him consider a summer exit.
The Spanish outlet, citing reports from England, states that Gallagher will again be on the agenda of Premier League clubs in January. However, contrary to some suggestions that he could be allowed to leave on loan, the report is clear that he will only be sold for a large fee.
Indeed, it is asserted that Atleti will only permit him to leave if a suitor offers 'more than €60 million,' representing a profit of €20m for the Spanish giants. He cost €42m when he joined from Chelsea last year.
It would be a hefty outlay on Gallagher, but he would still be significantly cheaper than Man Utd's top midfield target Carlos Baleba, who is expected to fetch more than €100m when he departs Brighton.
