Man Utd swap? Amorim to trade €50m flop for Gallagher
Manchester United could be handed the opportunity to trade Manuel Ugarte for Conor Gallagher as Atletico Madrid are interested in the former, according to Spanish media.
The Red Devils are in desperate need of midfield upgrades. Their failure to strengthen that department in the summer has already cost them dearly, and Ruben Amorim is adamant that he will not tweak his system.
The Portuguese is safe in the job for now, but he has been told that he must deliver European football this season. So far, this seems like a tall task, but the acquisition of a midfielder in January may improve their chances of sneaking into Europe slightly.
With top target Carlos Baleba likely to prove unattainable in the winter, Man Utd are looking at alternative targets, and Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher continues to be linked with the Old Trafford club.
Man Utd attempted a late-window swoop for him in the summer, only to be told by the Spanish giants that the England international was not available for a loan move.
Man Utd to send Ugarte to Atleti?
However, it has already been suggested that Atleti's stance could be different in January, and it seems that there is the potential for a mutually beneficial deal.
According to Fichajes, Atleti are interested in Man Utd midfielder Manuel Ugarte. The Spanish publication claims that they are keen on an initial loan with a purchase option in the region of €30 million.
Ugarte has failed to live up to his €50m price tag at Man Utd since joining last summer, and Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that the Uruguay international will be one to watch in 2026. He fielded interest from Serie A in the summer, but his future may actually lie in the Spanish capital.
A move to Atleti could pave the way for Gallagher to head in the other direction, although whether he would be keen on a move to Man Utd remains to be seen. He reportedly wants to join a Champions League club in January.
