Isak informed Newcastle of his desire to leave the club in late July, but Eddie Howe’s side were reluctant to sanction a sale, despite exiling the 25-year-old from first-team training.

Liverpool’s first offer of €127m (£110m) was then immediately turned down by Newcastle in mid-August and the Reds pondered whether or not to lodge a second bid following Hugo Ekitike’s flying start to life at Anfield.

However, they submitted a successful €150m bid in the early hours of Transfer Deadline Day and Liverpool have now formally announced the arrival of Isk in a major coup for Arne Slot.

The Sweden star has signed a six-year contract at Liverpool and he has usurped new team-mate Florian Wirtz (€125m) as the most expensive player in Premier League history as a result of his blockbuster move to Anfield.

Isak has left Newcastle having scored 62 goals and provided 11 assists in 109 appearances across a fruitful three-year spell at the club.

The 25-year-old joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad for a transfer fee of €70m in 2022 and he quickly established himself as one of the best strikers in the Premier League upon his arrival at St James’ Park.

Isak’s arrival has taken Liverpool’s summer spending to beyond the €480m mark, with the Reds setting a new record for the most money spent in a single transfer window in the process.

Isak will compete with the aforementioned Ekitike for a starting berth at Anfield and he could make his Liverpool debut during their Premier League clash against Burnley on 14 September.
