Newcastle had one of the most hectic and chaotic transfer windows of any team in England and Europe as they sold star player Alexander Isak, missed out on numerous targets but still splashed the cash on a number of stars.

One player Newcastle tried and failed to sign was Inter Milan midfielder Frattesi, Moretto has revealed in his daily slot on Romano's Italian YouTube channel.

Frattesi to Newcastle

Moretto explained how Newcastle came knocking on Inter's door with a verbal offer for Frattesi.

Inter were ready to sell Frattesi, but only for a price of more than €40 million and on a permanent deal.

Newcastle prepared a certain figure ahead of a potential official offer but the two parties couldn't agree on the conditions, also regarding the obligation to buy.

As a result, Newcastle never proceeded with that official offer and Frattesi remained at Inter.

Frattesi has not played this season due to injury but Moretto adds that he is expected to start on Wednesday in Champions League matchday one away at Ajax.

Frattesi played a key role in Inter's run to the Champions League final last season, scoring decisive goals in the quarter-final success over Bayern Munich and the semi-final against Barcelona.

He hit an 88th minute winner versus Bayern Munich in Germany, while his strike in extra time sealed a crazy 4-3 victory over Barcelona in the semis to send Inter to the final.

Frattesi, a goalscoring midfielder, joined Inter from Sassuolo in 2023 and has scored 15 goals in 89 games.

He has scored eight goals in 30 caps for the Italy national team.
