Chelsea ‘won’t win Premier League in 100 years’ with these three players
Chelsea have been told they need to upgrade three players if they are to become serious Premier League title challenges.
The Blues saw their undefeated start to the season grind to a halt on Saturday as they suffered a 2-1 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford, with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez’s early red card condemning them to a difficult evening.
The Spaniard is a player whose future has long been under question, but Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes the Stamford Bridge side will continue to struggle so long as they have players like Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana also starting.
Carragher picks out stars holding Chelsea back
Carragher claimed that the Blues will not win the title in ‘100 years’ with players of that standard at the core of Enzo Maresca’s defence.
He said: “I think the manager’s done a brilliant job since he’s been there. He’s come in year one and got Champions League football, he’s done brilliant to take PSG to the cleaners in the Club World Cup.
“My criticism of Chelsea is the actual three-and-a-half years as a club and how they can still have that team. We’re saying they’ve got no chance to win the league. And Chelsea fans know that.
“You go back to when Chelsea were winning the league, look at their goalies: Petr Cech and Thibault Courtois. That tells you all you need to know.
“There’s nothing wrong with Maresca but after this time they’re going to Old Trafford with the goalkeeper and the centre-backs they’ve got. They can’t win the league in 100 years, with the standard of those players in those positions right now.”
Chelsea are sixth in the early Premier League table, having only won two of their opening five fixtures. The Blues are in Carabao Cup action against Lincoln on Tuesday before hosting Brighton, Benfica and Liverpool prior to the second international break of the season.
