Fabio Vieira's loan move from Arsenal to Hamburger SV has raised eyebrows in the Bundesliga.

The final hours and days of a transfer window are usually a time when clubs - and players - hit the panic button and complete certain moves as a last resort.

The departure of Portugal international Fabio Vieira from Arsenal seems to fall into that category. With no future at the Emirates, the Gunners were desperate to offload the midfielder before the deadline.

To facilitate his exit, Arsenal massively softened their stance on him. They had initially wanted to sell him, but their demands proved too steep for Bundesliga side Stuttgart, and no deal materialised.

Ultimately, a solution was found when promoted German side Hamburg expressed an interest in Vieira during their negotiations for Albert Sambi Lokonga, who joined on a permanent deal for just €300,000.

Hamburg got a 'super bargain' with Vieira

Arsenal agreed to let Vieira leave on loan, with BILD now revealing that HSV managed to secure a 'super bargain.' If the 25-year-old plays a certain number of games, the Bundesliga outfit will not even have to pay a loan fee.

The fact that HSV were able to strike a deal for Vieira caused a bit of a shock around the Bundesliga, given that they have only just returned to the top flight after seven years in the second tier, spending much of the past decade in the doldrums.

HSV bosses Stefan Kuntz and Claus Costa have played a blinder with the signing of Vieira, although there is an acceptance that the Portuguese is unlikely to remain at the Volkspark beyond this season.

Hamburg have a €20 million purchase option, but there is no way that they will pay that unless they get guarantees that they can immediately sell him on for a profit.

When the news of this €20m clause emerged, one fan joked on social media that Kuntz had been playing too much Football Manager. Indeed, many will feel that Vieira to HSV is a deal that you would only see in a video game, not in real life.
