Andre Onana may REJECT Trabzonspor move, Fabrizio Romano reveals
There is no guarantee that Andre Onana will accept a move to Trabzonspor, Fabrizio Romano has explained.
On Saturday, the news broke in multiple outlets that Man Utd accepted a loan offer from Trabzonspor for the Cameroonian goalkeeper.
David Ornstein and others have revealed that Onana is giving the move serious thought and it has been expected in some quarters that the transfer is now a formality.
However, Romano has warned that Onana has not yet made up his mind and he could decide to stay at United and fight for his place with new signing Senne Lammens.
Onana to stay at United or join Trabzonspor?
“Manchester United and Trabzonspor have reached an agreement for Andre Onana to join the Turkish club on loan,” Romano said on his X channel.
“It is a deal until the end of the season, the agreement club-to-club is done.
“What is needed now is the green light from the player. Onana has to decide his future soon, if he wants to stay in Europe and continue at Manchester United - competing his spot with Senne Lammens and Altay Bayındır - or move to Turkey and be a regular starter at Trabzonspor.
“He has to decide as soon as possible. Trabzonspor are waiting for Onana.”
United have attempted all summer to offload Onana after two miserable seasons at Old Trafford.
However, United failed to find a buyer in Europe before the end of the main summer transfer window on Monday.
Despite this, United still brought in a new number one on Deadline Day in Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.
Although the main European window has closed, there are still places such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia that are open for a while longer.
Man Utd bought Onana for a fee of around €55 million from Inter in 2023.
Big things were expected of the Cameroonian, who had enjoyed an outstanding Champions League season with the Nerazzurri in 2022-23, playing a key role in their run to the final.
He kept more clean sheets than anyone in the tournament, including five in the knockout rounds, as Inter narrowly and unluckily lost 1-0 to Man City in the showpiece in June. He was also heralded as the best goalkeeper in the world with the ball at his feet.
However, Onana endured an error-prone season in 2023-24, with United having their worst defensive record and most goals conceded in decades.
He made a string of mistakes, in particular in the Champions League group stage elimination in games against Galatasaray, Copenhagen and Bayern Munich.
Last season Onana improved a touch earlier in the campaign but he reverted to his first season's form in 2025 as United went trophyless and finished in 15th.
And this campaign he was dropped for Altay Bayindir for the first three Premier League games of the season in a clear sign his future at United is up. Bayindir has also struggled, leading to the signing of Lammens.
Onana did play in the EFL Cup game against Grimsby but disappointed in a shock exit on penalties.
