Chelsea WON'T give up on signing Fermin Lopez
Chelsea remain keen on Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez despite their failed attempt to sign him, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Blues launched an audacious bid for the 22-year-old late in the summer window after holding talks with his representatives for several days. Chelsea wanted to see if there was a deal to be done, despite not receiving encouragement from the player.
Ultimately, their approach was always doomed to fail. The Stamford Bridge club offered just €40 million for the Spain international, which was well below Barcelona's valuation.
Moreover, the Blaugrana were reluctant to sell anyway, with Hansi Flick having publicly stated mere hours before the Blues' bid that he was planning with Fermin as a key part of his squad.
The midfielder has since come out and confirmed that he had no intention of leaving Barcelona this summer, serving as a further blow to Chelsea. However, we likely haven't heard the last of the West London club's interest in the Spaniard.
Chelsea still want Fermin
According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea will keep monitoring Fermin with a view to a future move, although there is no guarantee that they will be able to sign him.
Chelsea missed out on Xavi Simons to Tottenham and brought in Brighton youngster Facundo Buonanotte on a straight loan as a stopgap solution, so they clearly feel that they have room for another elite attack-minded midfielder.
Romano has revealed that Chelsea were already keen on Fermin last year, and they will not be deterred by his rejection this summer. Their bid, the insider says, was more to test the waters to see if there could be an opportunity rather than a full-on assault for his signature.
Should Fermin again fail to establish himself as a regular starter and decide that he wants a new challenge next year, Chelsea will be at the front of the queue. However, should he remain reluctant to leave, the Blues' chances of signing him will be slim.
