'Heartbroken' Hojlund believes he is BETTER than Sesko
Rasmus Hojlund did not want to leave Man Utd this summer and believes he is better than his replacement Benjamin Sesko.
Hojlund was put up for sale by United this summer following the €85 million signing of Benjamin Sesko from Leipzig.
The Athletic reports that despite Sesko's arrival, Hojlund was determined to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his place.
The report states that Hojlund believed himself to be superior to Sesko and was confident he would prove this to manager Ruben Amorim and to the management over time.
Hojlund heartbroken
Unfortunately, Hojlund was never given the chance to do so as he was frozen out by first being dropped in the friendly against Everton and then being offered no minutes against Fiorentina, nor in the Premier League games against Arsenal and Fulham, and the EFL Cup against Grimsby.
As a result, Hojlund felt he had no choice but to accept a transfer to Napoli on an initial loan for €5m and obligation to buy for a further €45m.
Man Utd will have a five per cent sell-on clause, while there is a minimum fee release clause of €90m in the deal.
Hojlund agreed a five year contract until 2030 at Napoli with the option of a further year.
The report says that Hojlund was "heartbroken" to leave the club he supported as a boy.
The report will add further pressure to Sesko, who has endured a difficult start to his Man Utd career and has no goals or assists in his first four matches.
Napoli decided to move for Hojlund after Romelu Lukaku suffered a long-term injury that will keep him out until close to Christmas.
AC Milan had been favourites for Hojlund but Napoli moved in to close the deal.
Man Utd signed Hojlund in the summer of 2023 from Atalanta for €75 million plus €10m in add-ons.
The 22-year-old struggled badly, failing to score a single Premier League goal before Christmas in his first season.
Despite picking up in the second half of the campaign, he was a disaster in his second season.
Hojlund scored just four Premier League goals all season and United gave up on the striker.
