Manchester United and Napoli are close to reaching an agreement for the transfer of Rasmus Hojlund, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Denmark international is expected to leave Old Trafford before the 1 September deadline after being deemed surplus to requirements by Ruben Amorim.

Hojlund has yet to make a matchday squad in this nascent season in what is a clear sign that the 22-year-old is no longer welcome at Man Utd. The striker, too, has seen the writing on the wall despite initially wanting to stay and fight for his place.

Talks with AC Milan ultimately yielded no agreement as the Rossoneri only offered a loan deal with an option to make it permanent next year. Hojlund rejected the move as he wants to be the face of a long-term project and is only willing to consider a permanent transfer or a loan with a purchase obligation.

With Milan out of the picture, Napoli began exploring a move for Hojlund last week in the wake of Romelu Lukaku's long-term injury, which is set to keep him out until at least November.

Napoli close to Hojlund agreement

Talks between the Serie A champions and Man Utd have been positive in recent days, and Fabrizio Romano now reports that discussions over the formula of a potential transfer are at the 'final stages.'

Napoli are offering a similar deal to the one Milan had proposed, but with the crucial difference that their option to buy can become an obligation if certain conditions are met. The Red Devils are inclined to accept the offer.

Meanwhile, negotiations are also taking place with Hojlund to agree personal terms and get his final green light for the move. It remains to be seen if he is happy with the offer Napoli have presented to Man Utd.

Contact between the club and the player has so far been encouraging, with Hojlund said to have come away impressed from his conversations with Antonio Conte.
