Sesko signing given ‘green light’: Man Utd sent positive message from Leipzig
Benjamin Sesko has been given a 'green light' to sign for Manchester United from RB Leipzig, according to reports from Germany.
Sesko has become the Red Devils’ leading transfer target after signing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, with Ruben Amorim eager to get a striker to compete with or replace Rasmus Hojlund.
Interest from Newcastle United has emerged in recent days as they brace themselves to sign an alternative to Alexander Isak, who appears destined to move to Liverpool, hurrying the Old Trafford side into action.
Man Utd are “very optimistic” that they will beat Newcastle to the Slovenia international, according to German source AbsolutFussball.
It reports that the Red Devils are confident about negotiations with both RB Leipzig and Sesko, having studied him closely for some time.
Ineos, the owners of the club, has given the green light for a deal to be completed. This is expected to be around the €70 million mark in terms of initial payments, with bonuses and a sell-on clause also set to be included.
The report suggests that United will be able to complete the Sesko deal quickly.
“Ineos released funds for a No.9 or central midfielder. The decision fell on a striker. Sales are necessary for any further transfers,” it states.
Leipzig’s transfer balance certainly suggests that they need to sell. While they have signed more than €90m worth of talent, their sales have only been worth €6m. This comes amid a backdrop of the club having missed European qualification for the first time in nearly a decade.
Sesko making up his mind over Man Utd – Romano
Football transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has said that Man Utd have started making contact with Leipzig over the Sesko deal but that the player has yet to make up his mind over what his future holds.
“Man Utd have made direct contact with RB Leipzig to inform them they are prepared to bid for Benjamin Sesko, but only if they have encouragement from the player, who says: ‘OK, I want to join you,’” Romano says.
“Newcastle are ready to match whatever is needed with Leipzig and the player. Man Utd are ready to bid, which is different. But this move from Man Utd is part of the strategy to show the player they are serious and that they are ready for business and can really do it.
“Now the story enters an important stage. It’s going to be on Sesko to decide what he wants to do: Newcastle or Man Utd. So he’ll talk with his agent and family about his future. Sesko will now seriously start deciding what he wants to do.”
The next few days, then, will be pivotal to Man Utd’s transfer window.
