Man Utd scout the 'new Declan Rice' after Baleba snub
Manchester United sent scouts to watch Adam Wharton this weekend ahead of a potential late summer transfer bid for the Crystal Palace central midfielder.
That is according to TBR Football, who report that United scouts were present at Stamford Bridge on Sunday to see Wharton play in the 0-0 draw between Palace and Chelsea.
Wharton impressed as a holding midfielder for a Palace team who conceded very little space or chances on the day.
United move for Wharton
United are desperate to sign a number six before the end of the transfer window and they have been pushing for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.
However, United have admitted defeat in their pursuit of the Cameroon star as Brighton are refusing to sell.
Thus, according to TBR, they have moved their attention to Wharton, who is one of the most highly-rated youngsters in the Premier League.
The midfielder has been labelled by some as the ‘new Declan Rice’ due to his ability as a holding midfielder.
Wharton arrived from Blackburn Rovers last year and he was even included in England’s squad for the 2024 European Championship after a stellar start to life at Selhurst Park.
He has made 44 appearances for Palace, winning the FA Cup and also being capped once by England.
It would be surprising if the Eagles were to sell Wharton at this stage in the transfer window.
Marc Guehi is close to a move to Liverpool and Eberechi Eze appears to be increasingly likely to join Tottenham Hotspur, so it is hard to see Palace sanctioning the sale of a third key player.
FootballTransfers understands that Man Utd have also asked about the possibility of signing Quinten Timber from Feyenoord, with a deal in this case much more viable as the 24-year-old has just one year remaining on his contract with the Eredivisie side.
United started the season with a 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal at Old Trafford despite a decent performance.
