Man City open talks to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma - Fabrizio Romano
Manchester City have begun exploring a move for PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, according to Fabrice Hawkins and Fabrizio Romano.
The Italy international is on his way out of France after being snubbed by PSG for the UEFA Super Cup. The Champions League winners have decided to omit Donnarumma from their squad to face Tottenham due to his refusal to sign a contract extension.
The 26-year-old's deal expires next year, and talks over fresh terms have yielded no results. As a result of the impasse, PSG have signed Lucas Chevalier, who has now officially assumed the No.1 role in Luis Enrique's side.
Donnarumma is understood to feel betrayed and hurt by PSG after his exploits in their stunning treble-winning season last term. He initially sought to fight for his place and run down his contract, but a move this summer is now increasingly likely.
Man Utd and Chelsea have both been heavily linked with the Italian, but while the former are indeed interested, the latter are not actually involved in this race, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Man City open talks for Donnarumma
The battle for Donnarumma's signature could become an all-Manchester affair as Fabrice Hawkins reports that Man City have now also acted on their interest in the shot-stopper. The Cityzens are long-term admirers and have now approached PSG over a deal.
Romano has also confirmed that talks are taking place, although Man City have no intention of matching PSG's initial asking price of €50 million. Moreover, City first need Ederson to leave before proceeding with a move for Donnarumma.
The Brazilian remains in talks with Turkish giants Galatasaray, who have incidentally also been linked with Donnarumma. However, Romano reports that the latter was never a credible option, whereas Ederson is a realistic target, with a deal deemed possible.
On 2 August, Duncan Castles revealed on The Transfers Podcast that Man City were expected to enter the race for Donnarumma. PSG are desperate to offload the goalkeeper as they do not want to lose him for nothing next year.
