RB Leipzig open talks with Liverpool over Harvey Elliott - David Ornstein
RB Leipzig have officially opened talks with Liverpool over a deal for Harvey Elliott, according to David Ornstein.
The 22-year-old is facing an uncertain future at Anfield, and it is looking increasingly as though Elliott will not be a Liverpool player come the end of the window.
The eminently talented youngster struggled for minutes under Arne Slot last term, only starting two Premier League matches. By his own admission, Elliott does not want to 'waste' valuable years of his career, and he is therefore reluctantly exploring a move away.
Earlier this week, reports emerged out of Germany that RB Leipzig had taken a genuine interest in the attacking midfielder. Red Bull's football operations are, of course, now headed by former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
It was acknowledged that a deal for Elliott would be challenging for the Bundesliga side to pull off given that the England U21 star also has suitors in the Premier League. Moreover, he is not expected to come cheap.
Leipzig open Elliott talks
Nevertheless, Leipzig have decided to make a concrete attempt to sign Elliott, with David Ornstein of The Athletic confirming that talks with Liverpool are currently taking place.
These discussions are still at an early stage, and it remains to be seen if Leipzig can muster the resources to sign Elliott. The Red Bulls are expected to sell Benjamin Sesko and Xavi Simons, but Elliott, who would replace the latter, would become one of their most expensive signings.
That record is currently held by Simons, who joined the club permanently in January for an upfront fee of €50 million and a further €30m in potential bonuses. Elliott is expected to cost between €45m and €60m, depending on whether a buy-back clause is inserted in the deal.
Liverpool are not desperate to sell the 22-year-old, but the funds would be welcome considering that €300m has already been spent on new recruits. The Reds still want to sign Alexander Isak and a new centre-back.
