'Done deal' - Liverpool complete Darwin Nunez sale
Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has greenlit a transfer to Al-Hilal, according to a report.
The Uruguay international is on his way out of Anfield. Signed in 2022 with sky-high expectations, Nunez has failed to live up to the hype in his three years at Liverpool.
Despite this, he has been a popular figure on Merseyside. Although derided for his profligate finishing, Nunez can't be faulted for his work rate and commitment, and this is often enough to get fans on your side.
However, it is ultimately not sufficient for a team that wants to consistently challenge - and win - European and domestic trophies, so Nunez's days at Liverpool have been numbered for some time.
Initially, his destination appeared to be Italy, with both Napoli and AC Milan taking a keen interest in the 26-year-old. Nothing ultimately came of it, though, with Nunez proving too expensive.
Nunez set for Al-Hilal
Instead, the Saudi Pro League has returned to the front of the queue for the forward after already expressing an interest in January. Back then, it was Al-Nassr; now it is Al-Hilal.
The Saudi giants managed to agree a deal with Liverpool earlier on Wednesday. The Reds will receive a guaranteed fee of €53 million and further add-ons in the future, which is in line with his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €51.4m.
The only thing that was still holding up the deal was Nunez himself. Although he had already opened the door to a move last week, he needed to give his final green light.
This has now come, with Florian Plettenberg reporting that the Uruguayan has agreed to join Al-Hilal. Nunez's move to Riyadh is now considered a 'done deal.' He is expected to fly out to Germany shortly to complete his medical and link up with his new teammates in their pre-season camp.
